Type of wrapping paper

First, it’s important to choose the right type of wrapping paper. Look for paper that feels like paper, as foily types will not work for this project. We recommend taking your earring cutters to the store with you to ensure that the print is suitable for your desired earring size. Generally, smaller prints work better for earrings. For this project, we found a wrapping paper with tiny Christmas prints that looked perfect.

Prepare the clay

To begin, flatten a piece of white clay and cut out your desired shapes using your earring cutters. Use white clay to ensure that the print looks great. Next, choose the elements of the wrapping paper you want to use and cut a big rectangle around them. Then Place them on your clay earrings where you want the design to be. Press the paper gently onto your clay and and make sure they are fixed on your earrings.

Then soak a cotton pad using hand sanitizer gel or acetone-free nail polish remover. Swipe the cotton pad on the wrapping paper. Wet the paper thoroughly, then let it dry for a while. Once dry, place your earrings with the wrapping paper attached in the oven at 110 degrees Celsius (or according to your clay packaging instructions) for one hour. Check on them a few times during the baking process to ensure the paper does not burn. After an hour, let them cool completely.

Removing wrapping paper and clean up

Once cooled, soak your earrings in water for a bit to help the paper come off easily. The paper should come off cleanly, leaving behind a perfect print. Removing the paper and revealing the print is a satisfying experience, and you’ll be amazed by the results.

You can also use this technique on colorful clay, but be aware that the colors may not transfer well, and the color of the clay might be stronger than the print. So it’s best to use white or light-colored clay.

Finally, inspect the edges of your earrings, and use an acrylic marker to correct any bits of earrings without the print. Then, use a gloss varnish to seal your earrings, which is optional, but can make the colors appear brighter.
